Demonic strongholds

If there are demons remaining within us even after repentance and deliverance, do not panic or despair.  The main issue is submitting to God and repenting from all wilful sin.  This will remove many demons from us and we should be able to function normally without being possessed.

Often times even after we have repented from all wilful sin that we know of, demons may still remain to torment us.  Why? There is a period of ongoing refinement whilst God continues to chastise us to mould us into the person he wants us to be.  Most people fall into this category.  Their demons are not powerful enough to overcome them but if they get angry or tempted, the demons will rise back up and start manifesting.

Finally, even after we have been refined, we could still be sent an evil spirit to help us walk the narrow path.  Some of us are vulnerable to certain types of sin and God, wanting to save our eternal souls, will allow an evil spirit to remind us to rely on God.  For example, God allowed the Apostle Paul a thorn in the flesh, a messenger from satan, to help him prevent potential pride from overtaking him.

Key points

  • Wilful sin is an open doorway for evil spirits
  • Some wilful sins are hidden and God puts us through refinement
  • Be thankful for refinement and God will deal with us as children
  • It’s possible for God to send us an evil spirit to help us stay on the path
  • In my experience, dying to self, that is, crucifying the desires of the flesh, will remove virtually all demons

Scriptural basis

Does God send evil spirits to people? Yes he can and he has before:

Judges 9:23 King James Version (KJV)

23 Then God sent an evil spirit between Abimelech and the men of Shechem; and the men of Shechem dealt treacherously with Abimelech:

Why does God send evil spirits to people if God is good?  The Lord chastens his children.

Hebrews 12:9-11 King James Version (KJV)

Furthermore we have had fathers of our flesh which corrected us, and we gave them reverence: shall we not much rather be in subjection unto the Father of spirits, and live?

10 For they verily for a few days chastened us after their own pleasure; but he for our profit, that we might be partakers of his holiness.

11 Now no chastening for the present seemeth to be joyous, but grievous: nevertheless afterward it yieldeth the peaceable fruit of righteousness unto them which are exercised thereby.

If we endure the lessons then God will consider us sons and daughters but if we despise his chastisement then God will deal with us as bastards:

Hebrews 12:5-7 King James Version (KJV)

And ye have forgotten the exhortation which speaketh unto you as unto children, My son, despise not thou the chastening of the Lord, nor faint when thou art rebuked of him:

For whom the Lord loveth he chasteneth, and scourgeth every son whom he receiveth.

If ye endure chastening, God dealeth with you as with sons; for what son is he whom the father chasteneth not?

But if ye be without chastisement, whereof all are partakers, then are ye bastards, and not sons.

God will refine us:

Zechariah 13:9 King James Version (KJV)

And I will bring the third part through the fire, and will refine them as silver is refined, and will try them as gold is tried: they shall call on my name, and I will hear them: I will say, It is my people: and they shall say, The Lord is my God.

Isaiah 48:10 King James Version (KJV)

10 Behold, I have refined thee, but not with silver; I have chosen thee in the furnace of affliction.

Even after refinement, the Lord might still send us an evil spirit to help us stay on the narrow path, lest we become proud (or angry or lustful).

2 Corinthians 12:7-9 King James Version (KJV)

And lest I should be exalted above measure through the abundance of the revelations, there was given to me a thorn in the flesh, the messenger of Satan to buffet me, lest I should be exalted above measure.

For this thing I besought the Lord thrice, that it might depart from me.

And he said unto me, My grace is sufficient for thee: for my strength is made perfect in weakness. Most gladly therefore will I rather glory in my infirmities, that the power of Christ may rest upon me.

Case Study 1

A girl struggled with sexual sin and every time she would fall into it a Jezebel spirit would come in and destroy the relationship. Realizing she needed help, she sought deliverance. Many demons were cast out, but Jezebel refused to go. After much prayer God revealed to her that Jezebel was her seeing eye dog, and saw things in black and white. This dog was on a leash and very much under the girls power and authority, but if she slipped into sin the dog would bite. It was there to teach her about sexual sin in terms of black and white, in a world full of colour.

Case Study 2

I met a deliverance minister who probably got into deliverance because he himself had demons.  He displayed a really vast knowledge about evil spirits and knew the names of just about every demon, where they came from and how they were connected to sin.  I saw him do deliverances on people and it seemed to be effective.  However, he himself had quite a few demons inside him.  How was this possible?  I believe that he was probably free from wilful sin because he understood the devastating consequences of sin, so my conclusion is that he was probably going through a period of refinement. And the Lord chastises those whom he loves.
