Love God

The commandment to love God is the first and greatest command.  In fact, to love Jesus is to keep his commandments.  Love is not a feeling when it comes to the bible.  It is obedience to the word of God, which then allows us to express love for God properly.

So, the first step to loving God is surrendering our lives totally over to God.  We no longer live for our own satisfaction, instead we aim to please God.

Often we think we love God when we have a warm fuzzy feeling towards God.  Whilst this can uplifting for a few moments, real love for God requires sacrifice and hard work, in obedience to the will of God.  Humans do not have the natural ability to love God, we need the Holy Spirit to dwell in us permanently before we can start to love God properly.

Key points

  • Loving God starts with total surrender and aiming to please God
  • Then ask Jesus to pray the Father to send the Holy Spirit to dwell in you to guide, control and inspire you daily
  • Pray to God to take more of you and put in more of Jesus Christ
  • Say you love God with all your heart, mind and strength when you wake, sit down, get up and go to sleep
  • We need God’s help to love him, so ask him to help you love him

Scriptural basis

Total surrender is required, which means to surrender the desires of our heart and to pursue the things of God:

Luke 9:23 King James Version (KJV)

23 And he said to them all, If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow me.

We end up hating our former lives, including the people in our former lifestyle as well as the old us:

Luke 14:25-27 King James Version (KJV)

25 And there went great multitudes with him: and he turned, and said unto them,

26 If any man come to me, and hate not his father, and mother, and wife, and children, and brethren, and sisters, yea, and his own life also, he cannot be my disciple.

27 And whosoever doth not bear his cross, and come after me, cannot be my disciple.

Once we understand the great treasure we have found, we give up other things for the wisdom of God:

Matthew 13:45-46 King James Version (KJV)

45 Again, the kingdom of heaven is like unto a merchant man, seeking goodly pearls:

46 Who, when he had found one pearl of great price, went and sold all that he had, and bought it.

To love Jesus is to keep his commandments then he will pray to send the Holy Spirit to you:

John 14:15-17 King James Version (KJV)

15 If ye love me, keep my commandments.

16 And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you for ever;

17 Even the Spirit of truth; whom the world cannot receive, because it seeth him not, neither knoweth him: but ye know him; for he dwelleth with you, and shall be in you.

When we love God, we keep his commandments and overcome the things of world, be it secular music, TV, games, sports, drugs etc.:

1 John 5:3-5 King James Version (KJV)

For this is the love of God, that we keep his commandments: and his commandments are not grievous.

For whatsoever is born of God overcometh the world: and this is the victory that overcometh the world, even our faith.

Do confess that you love God with all your heart, mind and strength everyday:

Deuteronomy 6:5-7 King James Version (KJV)

And thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thine heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy might.

And these words, which I command thee this day, shall be in thine heart:

And thou shalt teach them diligently unto thy children, and shalt talk of them when thou sittest in thine house, and when thou walkest by the way, and when thou liest down, and when thou risest up.

Peter denied Jesus three times even though he said he would follow Jesus anywhere.  It wasn’t till after Pentecost and the empowerment of the Holy Spirit that the disciples all became bold.  Jesus prophesies to Peter that when he is old, he will be die for the kingdom:

John 21:18 King James Version (KJV)

18 Verily, verily, I say unto thee, When thou wast young, thou girdest thyself, and walkedst whither thou wouldest: but when thou shalt be old, thou shalt stretch forth thy hands, and another shall gird thee, and carry thee whither thou wouldest not.
