When God started showing me who I really was, I started to feel the Fear of God. It was not a panic or religious fear. It was reverential fear that produced obedience and submissiveness to God in me. That’s why I surrendered my life to God, stopped sinning and obeyed him by reading the bible, fasting, praying and cutting out the things of the world (TV, secular music etc..).
It came from an appreciation of just how absolutely all powerful the God being is. He is really immense, holy and righteous. Once this clicked into place in my brain: obedience to the word of God came naturally. Why? Because I understood from the bible that God does anything he pleases. It was simply not good for my soul to oppose God. It is death.
Below is a video from Derek Prince explaining the Fear of God:
This is God’s universe and this is his earth. He made it all for himself. We should not treat the earth as our own, to do as we please. We are here to serve God. Our enjoyment of this earth is a by-product of God making the earth for himself. To think of our own pleasure and wants is serious error.
Revelation 4:11 King James Version (KJV)
11 Thou art worthy, O Lord, to receive glory and honour and power: for thou hast created all things, and for thy pleasure they are and were created.
Therefore, for me, the Fear of God is realising the true situation regarding our place in this world and also in relation to God. He is God. We are worms. The fact that God chooses to love worms does not mean the worms necessarily have rights.
Ultimately, some of us are called to be servants of Jesus Christ. Therefore, we are to serve God because we have been bought at a price. We are debtors. This is our true position. To prioritise our wants above God means we do not have the Fear of God in us. It is serious error that, I believe, leads to damnation.
